Matters of the Heart
OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute is committed to providing comprehensive heart care.
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year. That’s one in four of all deaths in the U.S. Those are pretty overwhelming facts that may make you wonder: “Am I doing enough to maintain a healthy heart?”
Comprehensive Care in Our Communities
With these staggering statistics, OSF HealthCare is committed to providing comprehensive heart care to patients, offering heart and vascular services in over 20 locations throughout Illinois. Additionally, we have the experience and facilities to perform the latest diagnostic and surgical procedures, as well as tests and treatments.
“A healthy heart is such an important component to a person’s overall well-being,” notes Dr. Ken Berkovitz, chief executive officer of OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute. “We want to be a patient’s go-to resource for prevention and treatment in heart health throughout the communities we serve.”
Because we're concerned about our patients' total well-being, we provide specialty clinics, exercise and weight management programs, as well as nutrition counseling to help patients manage their conditions or prevent them from developing. Cardiovascular and thoracic services include:
- Accredited Chest Pain Centers;
- Adult congenital heart;
- Arrhythmia care;
- Complex atrial fibrillation treatment;
- Cardiac rehabilitation and surgery;
- Diagnostic imaging and testing;
- Heart Failure Clinic;
- Hypertension Center;
- Interventional cardiology;
- Peripheral vascular disease management;
- Specialty clinics;
- Vascular medicine and surgery;
- Thoracic surgery;
- Vein disease treatment; and
- 3D scans.
“Many people don’t realize that OSF HealthCare has such a comprehensive, accessible Cardiovascular Institute,” Dr. Berkovitz says. “We have invested in a variety of new technologies for heart care to bring the best, most advanced services to keep our patients heart healthy.”
Breaking Location Barriers
For many patients living in rural communities, it may not always be possible to travel to see one of our cardiac specialists. But with TeleCardiology, seeing a specialist is possible anywhere, anytime, when appropriate.
TeleCardiology visits bridge the gap virtually, in real time, between patients—in either a hospital setting or doctor’s office—and the provider best suited to evaluate and collaborate on treatment planning… no matter where the patient and provider are located.
This means if a patient in Kewanee has an arrhythmia issue and the best doctor to help with their care is in Peoria, they don’t have to travel to Peoria. Through technology, doctors can collaborate to provide patients the best care no matter where they are.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
From a surgical prospective, we offer minimally invasive surgeries to help patients heal faster and experience less pain, bleeding and infection. One example is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a procedure designed to treat patients with severe aortic stenosis—a narrowing of the aortic valve opening that does not allow normal blood flow.
From diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation, we develop customized plans of care for patients that address their lifestyles, reduce risk factors, provide for needed interventions, and produce a positive outcome and excellent experience.
“Our overall goal is to help patients take control of their heart health so they can live longer, healthier lives,” Dr. Berkovitz adds. “If we do that, then we’ve done our job.” iBi
