Illinois French Creole History and Culture

Peoria Public Library

Dennis Stroughmatt is known for transporting people to an Illinois they’ve never known, our French Creole roots.

With ancient folktales, haunting ballads and foot-stomping fiddle tunes, Stroughmatt returns us to our past.

His work is archived at the Library of Congress, and he has performed at the Kennedy Center during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

He is also one of 20 people in the world who still speak the specific dialect that was Illinois’ first foreign tongue – after the Native Americans but before the English.

Free and open to the public.
