Garden Glories

For more than two decades, the Peoria Garden Club has hosted a walking tour of some of the most beautiful gardens in central Illinois. This year, the 86-year-old organization will present its biennial walk—“Garden Glories”—on Thursday, June 10th, from 10am to 7pm. Five Peoria homes will open up their yards during National Garden Week to give the public an up-close look.

The Wyman Home

1208 W. Wexford Place

The Wymans’ garden has been in constant change ever since they built their home in 1990, adding flowers, bushes, trees, a pool, two ponds with waterfalls and a creek, and a new block patio. A mixture of perennials, annuals and house plants accent the garden.

The Young Home
9052 N. Locust Lane

This garden has a variety of hostas, hydragea, astillbe, coral bells, roses, daisies, coneflowers, grasses and annuals. Set on a 14-acre lot with a picturesque river view, the fountain, statuary, gazebo, benches, shed and patios all make this a very inviting garden.

The Crawford Home
7417 N. Edgewild Drive

Nine years ago, the Crawfords built their home and designed gardens to complement it. Berms planted with an array of plants and flowers create privacy for the backyard and patio, while a side garden features wandering paths, with many unusual trees throughout.

The Hardesty Home
7513 N. Regent Place

A split rail fence is the anchor for a cottage garden consisting of a variety of mid-size perennials, while the yard has been transformed into a hosta garden with accents of anemone, oakleaf and climbing hydrangea, and rugosa roses.

The Clarke Home
3818 N. Northwood Avenue

More than 50 hydrangeas are nestled throughout the yard, as well as a vast variety of ferns, including the “Lady in Red,” and multiple varieties of hostas. A patch across the backyard gets full sun and is perfect for wildflowers, a favorite of the Clarkes.

The event will be held rain or shine. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the tour; kids under age 12 are $10. All proceeds will go toward various civic projects of the Peoria Garden Club, with an emphasis this year on community vegetable gardens.
