METHODIST MEDICAL CENTER
Methodist Medical Center, a 353-bed facility with almost 600 board-certified physicians, is committed to ranking in the top five percent in the country. Methodist was the first hospital in downstate Illinois to be awarded Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services, the nation’s highest honor in patient care. Methodist is also the only organization to achieve the 2006 Lincoln Gold Award for Performance Excellence—the highest honor awarded by the Lincoln Foundation, an Illinois quality organization.
In 2007, Methodist was one of only 41 hospitals nationwide selected to apply for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. And Methodist is the only hospital in downstate Illinois with Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, hip and knee replacement, and sleep disorders. Methodist is also a Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center.
A leader in heart care, Methodist was named one of the 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals
in the U.S. in both 1999 and 2005 and has the area’s longest-running open heart program.
The Methodist Emergency Department, a Level II Trauma Center, has Peoria’s largest dedicated Chest Pain Center. The Methodist STAT program helicopters heart attack patients to Methodist from throughout the region for immediate treatment. Oncology services include TomoTherapy, the highly accurate radiation
therapy system for more targeted cancer treatment, and the area’s only autologous bone marrow transplant program. At Methodist, surgeons use sophisticated robotics to perform minimally invasive procedures, from prostate surgery to repairing damaged hearts.
State-of-the-art diagnostic services at Methodist include the latest 3T MRI system; an advanced PET/CT scanner which helps World-Class Healthcare doctors pinpoint cancer at the very earliest stage; and an ultra-fast, 64-slice CT scanner to look inside the heart without surgery. Methodist was the first in the area to perform the new non-invasive coronary CT angiogram that made headlines in Time and Newsweek. The hospital also offers all-digital mammography systems, including the Methodist MammoVan, the only mobile mammography unit in Illinois featuring digital imaging. The new Methodist Breast Health Center takes a coordinated approach to treating breast cancer that ensures women begin treatment quickly and receive the support they need.
Methodist takes a proactive approach to health and wellness. The Methodist Wellmobile brings free screenings, including blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol testing, to people wherever they work or play. Methodist also features the most comprehensive behavioral health services in the area, with inpatient and outpatient care for children, teens, adults and seniors. More than 30 neuroscience physicians excel in over 40 neurological specialties, such as diagnosis and treatment of stroke, aneurysm and AVM disease, epilepsy, spine disorders, neuromuscular and Parkinson’s disease. The growing radiosurgery center houses downstate Illinois’ first Gamma Knife and Varian Trilogy for treatment of brain and spine disorders without an incision. In the spring of 2008, Dr. Patrick Elwood, Dr. James McGee and Dr. Brian Griffin were the first doctors in Illinois and among the first in the United States to treat patients with the “Leksell Perfexion Gamma Knife,” which allows the best precision around places like the optic nerves and the brain stem. The INI houses Illinois’ first primary stroke center certified by The Joint Commission, a multiple sclerosis center, a CARF-accredited neurorehabilitation program and clinical research. The INI is the clinical base for University of Illinois College of Medicine training programs in neurology, vascular neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AT PEORIA
In 1970, the state legislature mandated that the University of Illinois College of Medicine expand medical education opportunities by creating additional sites in Peoria, Rockford and Urbana. As a result, the Peoria School of Medicine opened its doors later that same year. In 1976, the School of Medicine moved to its current grounds, and in 1982, it was officially renamed the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP).
Since Peoria’s first class of 18 medical students graduated in 1973, more than 1,400 physicians have received Doctor of Medicine Degrees from UICOMP. Through the combined services of patient care, education and training, clinical research, job creation, volunteerism, community outreach and facility development, UICOMP strives to enrich the quality of healthcare and everyday life throughout central Illinois.
