Should the Heart of Peoria Commission be disbanded?
Created three years ago, the Heart of Peoria Commission has brought the principles of New Urbanism to the planning of development in Peoria. Now there is talk of disbanding the commission and moving its commissioners onto other city committees. Proponents say that this will save the city money and better integrate the principles of New Urbanism into existing commissions. Others suggest that the move will dilute the effectiveness of the commission, just as tangible progress is being made with the approval of the new zoning code last month. What do you think?

New Urbanism ultimately will greatly improve function, form, esthetics, livability and has the potential to make Peoria one of the most attractive and inviting cities in the country, but the principles of New Urbanism must be carried out fully in every aspect to Peoria's best advantage. If the commission is disbanded, who will be the watchdog over the development of New Urbanism with the knowledge and dedication of this commission? Allow the commission to carry on most effectively. How much money will be saved by disbanding them anyway? Consider deactivation of the commission possibly after New Urbanism is more firmly established, but not now.
