UnityPoint Health is proud to be the first healthcare organization in the region to introduce the Mazor X Spinal Robot, the latest in spinal surgery technology. “We are extremely excited to start using this new technology in spinal surgical procedures,” says Amy Hill, director of surgical services at UnityPoint Health. “We are constantly looking for innovative opportunities to provide high-quality care and improve the patient experience.”

The Mazor X Spinal Robot provides many benefits to patients by enhancing accuracy and improving the safety and overall efficiency of the surgery. As the first robot of its kind in the region, the Mazor X provides these benefits by producing precise, minimally invasive placements of spinal implants with minimum tissue disruption.

Software aids the surgeon in creating a detailed, pre-operative surgical plan that is customized for each patient. Through 3D blueprint imaging, the advanced robotic system understands the environment of the scanned surgical site before surgery. It helps the robot learn where it can and can’t move, allowing the surgeon optimal precision.

“This is a game changer for patients—we expect their recovery to be quicker, with less pain and less blood loss,” declares Dr. Patrick O’Leary, spinal surgeon with Midwest Orthopaedic Center. “In addition, we expect a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to function for our patients.

“The ability to create a precise and unique plan for each patient prior to surgery will create an efficient, minimally invasive procedure,” he adds. “Mazor X Robot technology will continue to evolve, and more applications are already underway, giving us the opportunity to continue growing with the innovative advancements.”

Both pediatric and adult spinal fusions are eligible procedures for the Mazor X Spinal Robot, which was made possible by a grant from the UnityPoint Health Methodist | Proctor Foundation. “We are grateful the Foundation has provided us with the generous opportunity to purchase the Mazor X Spinal Robot to bring the latest cutting-edge technology into our community,” notes Hill.

“The UnityPoint Health Methodist | Proctor Foundation is committed to providing resources to offer best-in-class healthcare services for the people of central Illinois today and into the future,” says Will Stevens, vice president of UnityPoint Health Methodist | Proctor Foundation. “Our investment in this cutting-edge surgical technology is an example of UnityPoint Health’s mission to improve the lives of the communities we serve and deliver the best possible patient outcome every time.” PM
