The Peoria Art Guild hosts its 46th annual Fine Art Fair this weekend, beginning at 10am and ending at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. The fair is nationally recognized as one of the top in the country with an anticipated audience of 40,000. 150 artists from across the U.S. will showcase and sell works of art in jewelry, painting, photography, ceramics, wood, glass, mixed media, metal and fiber. Admission is $5 for the entire weekend, and children 16 years and under are free. For more information, call 637-2787.

A Build the Block news conference will be held on Monday, September 29th, at 1:30pm in the Cotillion Ballroom at the Hotel Pere Marquette. The Peoria Riverfront Museum Collaborators will announce plans for The Street gallery. Speakers include Brad McMillan, Museum Collaboration Group; Congressman Ray LaHood; Marilyn Leyland, Peoria Historical Society; John Parks, Peoria Regional Museum Society; Margie White, African American Hall of Fame Museum; and Michael Bryant, CEO Roundtable.

The Peoria Medical Alliance’s Cook’s Tour of Peoria will be held on Thursday, September 25th, from 10am to 7pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour five beautiful kitchens in the Peoria area that have been decorated with table settings, floral arrangements and embellishments by Peoria merchants and florist. ArtsPartners of Central Illinois named Dr. George and Norma Kottemann as the recipients of the 2008 ArtsPartner of the Year award. The couple was nominated for their devoted support of the arts in Peoria. They accepted the award at the ArtsPartners Annual Meeting on September 17th.

Illinois Central College will release the book Role Models: Profiles of Successful African American Professionals in Peoria, Illinois during a reception on Thursday, September 25th, at the Gateway Building in Peoria. The book features 126 black professionals who live and work in Peoria and is part of the ICC Role Model Project. The book sells for $20 with all proceeds to support mentoring programs at ICC and in the local community. For more information, contact the ICC Diversity Department at (309) 694-5515.

The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) announced that the Peoria Zoo was granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission. To be accredited, Peoria Zoo underwent a thorough investigation to insure it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety. “Peoria Zoo was granted AZA accreditation because it meets high standards in every aspect of its operations,” said AZA President/CEO Jim Maddy. “Peoria should be proud to have one of the top zoos in North America as a valuable community asset.”

The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery and the Proctor Health Care Foundation announce Recovery Walks! 2008. The walk benefits the Ameel Rashid Scholarship for treatment of individuals and families affected by addiction. The walk will be held from 10am to 2pm and includes a one-mile or 5k walk. The Salvation Army Women’s Auxillary presents the 56th annual Style Show “Hold On To Your Hat.” There will be two separate shows, the luncheon show at 11:30am and the evening dessert show at 7:30pm.
