John D. Morris of Peoria was named director of development for the Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program and the Ronald Reagan Museum at Eureka College. Morris was formerly the chief development officer at Peoria’s Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences and WTVP Channel 47. His new responsibilities include fundraising for the program and museum.

The National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) is hosting a Bioenergy Research Forum from 9am to 4pm on July 18th. NCAUR is both a premier USDA Regional Research Center and the administrative center of the eight-state Midwest Area of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). This one-day special event will address the challenges and opportunities in bioenergy and will include discussions and presentations, as well as tours of the NCAUR research facility and pilot plant. The last housing unit of the YWCA Peoria’s GlenPerry Project is complete, bringing the project that began in 2004 to completion. YWCA Peoria invested 1.8 million dollars in the project, which provides a total of 16 housing units for 12 homeless families and children, and four single adults. The units offer safe and affordable housing for women and families.

The Central Illinois Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals is seeking nominations of deserving individuals and companies for award consideration for the 25th National Philanthropy Day in November. Nominating forms are in the mail this week or are available on afpcentralillinois.org. Preliminary nominations are due by August 6th and can be sent to Shelly Smith at ss@bradley.edu. The luncheon event will be held on Wednesday, November 12th at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria.

Registration forms are now available for the 2008 Mitchell “JJ” Anderson All Star Basketball Camp to be held from August 11th through 15th at the Peoria Civic Center. Participants have to complete and return the official registration form by Thursday, July 31st, to one of the following locations: PCCEO (Community Action Agency), Peoria Housing Authority, George Washington Carver Center, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Peoria or UPGRADE. The five-day camp is free to all boys and girls ages 8 to 15 and dedicated to the increasing need for educational assistance through scholarships. For more information, call 636-7020.

The Cancer Center for Healthy Living now offers a 90-minute Cancer Survival 101 program once a month for newly diagnosed patients and those that care for them. The next session is at 11:30am on July 10th at the Illinois CancerCare, located on Wood Sage Road on Route 91. Sessions are free of charge and include lunch. The Morton Chamber of Commerce is holding a professional education program titled “Marketing on a Shoestring” from 8:30am to noon at Freedom Hall. Three presenters will explain how businesses can develop and improve their marketing efforts. The cost is $20 for Chamber members and $40 for non-members. Friday/Saturday, July 11/12 @ OSF Saint Francis Center for Health, Peoria
Enjoy daily hot air balloon flights, tethered balloon rides, evening balloon glows, fireworks and more at Balloons on the Prairie held this weekend near the OSF Saint Francis Center for Health, located off Route 91 near The Shoppes at Grand Prairie. Gates open at 5pm on Friday and 4pm on Saturday. Admission is $10 per carload and tickets for tethered rides are $15 each. All proceeds from the weekend-long event will be dedicated to OSF Hospice.

Art from the Satellite City Transmissions, a group of twelve Peoria-area artists, will be displayed from July 12th to August 29th in the Preston Jackson Gallery in the Contemporary Art Center.
