On Thursday, June 19th, CityLink will join with public transportation systems across the country to participate in the third annual national "Dump the Pump Day" by encouraging citizens to ride public transportation to save money, conserve gasoline and help reduce greenhouse gases. An information gathering session will be held to form the "Friends of CityLink's Public Transit" group during an open house from 4 to 7pm at the Transit Center, located at 407 SW Adams St., Peoria. The object of the group is to educate the Peoria community about the benefits of a well-designed and accessible public transit system. Contact James Polk for more information at 688-4339. Caterpillar Inc. announced that it will acquire certain assets of Gremada Industries, Inc., a leader in the processes of remanufacturing and reclaiming metal parts and components used in transmissions, torque converters and final drives. The acquisition agreement was signed on June 15th and the purchase will enhance product and service offerings and increase strategic focus for remanufacturing in the mining and petroleum industries.
Pekin Main Street's annual Downtown Farmers Market, sponsored by Methodist Medical Center, begins this week. The weekly market will be held on Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 6:30pm through September 25th and on Saturday mornings from 8am to noon through August 30th in historic downtown Pekin next to the Courthouse on Capitol Street. Local artists are encouraged to join the market this year with the new "Artists Block," where they can showcase handcrafted arts, crafts and music. On Wednesdays from June 18th through September 24th, a new local farmers market comes to Peoria Heights. The Heritage Farmers Market at Heritage Square in Peoria Heights will offer seasonal produce and products ranging from farm produce, flowers, baked goods and herbs to tilapia and hand-made pasta from 4:30 to 7pm each Wednesday. Local entertainment and culinary presentations will be featured at the market.
Luthy Botanical Garden will host Garden Walks on three Tuesdays this summer. On June 24th, July 29th and August 26th, take this outdoor tour and enjoy the beauty of the plants and trees. There is no need to register; just go to the gift shop, where the tour will start. There is no charge for the tours but donations are appreciated. The ninth annual Maui Jim/Children's Home Charity Golf Classic held on June 2nd raised $350,000 for the Children's Home. The nine-year total now comes to $1.95 million. The proceeds play a significant role in the agency's ability to protect, teach and heal the children of central Illinois.
The Ethisphere Institute named Caterpillar Inc. to its second annual World's Most Ethical Companies list for the second time. The company's selection was based on the strength and effectiveness of its Ethics and Compliance and Corporate Responsibility programs. The Ethisphere Institute is an organization dedicated to the research and promotion of profitable best practices in global governance, business ethics, compliance and corporate responsibility. The 2008 World's Most Ethical Companies methodology committee reviewed more than 10,000 of the world's leading companies on six continents.
Six faculty physicians from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria were named to the Best Doctors in America list for 2007-2008: Dr. Richard P. Driessnack, clinical assistant professor of surgery; Dr. Norman C. Estes, professor and chair of surgery; Dr. Mark Thomas Jennings, professor of pediatrics; Dr. Brian Ted Maurer, clinical assistant professor of surgery; Dr. Lisa E. Snyder, clinical assistant professor of physical and rehabilitation medicine; and Dr. Joyce Elizabeth Wise, associate professor of clinical pediatrics. The annual listing represents the top five percent of American physicians and is the result of a comprehensive nomination and election process.
