The City of Peoria will hold a community forum on Monday, June 2nd, at 6pm to give the community an opportunity to have input into a new logo for the City. The forum will be held at the Civic Center in Room 220. A web survey has been set up for the public to complete prior to the forum—take a few minutes and visit logopeoria.com to complete the survey.
The 11th annual Bikes for Kids event is slated for this weekend. On Saturday, May 31st, the Salvation Army will be set up at its Corps Community Center, 2903 W. Nebraska in Peoria, to collect bikes for needy area children. Gently used bicycles, or those needing only minor repairs will be accepted between 9am and 3pm. Donation receipts will be available. Mechanics from Illinois Valley Wheelm’n and area bike shops will repair the donated bikes. Helmets will be available, courtesy of the Under Cover Helmet program from the Children’s Hospital of Illinois. More than 1400 children have received bikes in the previous ten years of the program.
The sixth annual Peoria Bach Festival will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church beginning next week. Local, regional and national musicians come together to celebrate Bach in a gorgeous setting provided by Trinity’s gothic architecture, reverberant acoustics and historical roots. Martin Dicke, Trinity’s cantor, and Dr. John Jost, director of choral activities at Bradley University, co-direct the week’s events. Best-selling author Joshua Shenk will visit Peoria and give two presentations on Monday and Tuesday, June 2nd and 3rd. On Monday, he will discuss his best-selling book, Lincoln's Melancholy: How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled His Greatness, at 7pm at United Presbyterian Church of Peoria, 2400 W. Northmoor Rd. A question and answer session and book signing will follow. The presentation is free and open to the public. On Tuesday, join Shenk for breakfast at the Hotel Pere Marquette, where he will discuss "Lincoln's Legacy and Mental Health Recovery." Doors open at 7:15 with breakfast at 8am. A Q&A session as well as a book signing will follow the presentation. Tickets are $25/person. The 17th annual Return to Pimiteoui Pow Wow will be held May 31st and June 1st at W.H. Sommer Park on Koerner Rd. (off Rt. 150 just past the Shoppes of Grand Prairie) in Peoria. This wholesome, family-centered event is a gathering of Native and Non-Native Americans from all over the country to sing, dance and share each other's company. The cultural center offers hands-on activities for children and adults, such as corn grinding, beading, finger weaving and working with clay. Storytelling, an ipaca and educational exhibits, and plants will also be featured. Artists from around the country will demonstrate Native American arts such as bow making, carving and flintknapping. There will be a primitive camp that depicts a living history of the 1600s, including tipis. Traders will be selling silverwork, jewelry, books, music, arts and crafts.
