While most large corporations see the advantages of providing ongoing staff training through corporate retreats, many small businesses and nonprofit organizations find them unaffordable. Yet these smaller organizations have just as much to gain from spending a few days unplugged to focus on team-building and communication skills. A week-long expedition to Tahiti on the company tab might be out of reach, but a weeknight in Bishop Hill, Illinois is well within the budget, and can be a fruitful investment in the long-term health of any organization.

At the Twinflower Inn, my wife and I host a lot of tourists—who come for the history, art galleries and diverse weekend events. But from the beginning, one of our goals was to create a space where creative people can gather to learn new skills, renew their commitment to making the world a better place, unplug from the day-to-day and strategize their next steps.

We have recently begun organizing retreats focused on specific skills, from storytelling and genealogy to creative writing and maple syrup making. Our most popular events have been our book lovers’ weekends, where folks bring a stack of books and read to their hearts’ content while we pamper them. Beyond a bed and a breakfast, we can help with other meals and snacks, provide a safe space for contemplative conversation, and even help arrange guest speakers and workshop facilitators on a wide range of topics.

Whether you are simply looking for an affordable, accessible space for an overnight retreat or would like help planning that retreat, there is no doubt that a few days away from the office grind can reap great rewards in building a more effective team and strengthening bonds of commitment from your employees.
