A principal at Woodrow Wilson Elementary in East Peoria Elementary School District 86, Heather Bowman does much more than manage day-to-day operations—she is a leader and coach who ensures students and staff receive the best services possible. Described as empathetic, insightful and purposeful, she maintains a student-centered approach to every aspect of her job with the greatest of integrity. As principal, Bowman communicates to the public, parents, students and staff; keeps abreast of curriculum trends; plans district initiatives and professional development for staff; evaluates assessment data and implements programs to address student needs; and assists with curriculum evaluation, implementation and maintenance. She monitors instruction in each classroom, develops and accounts for budgetary and financial transactions, and is responsible for the school safety program.

A top administrator with exceptional evaluation ratings, Bowman is highly respected by all stakeholders in the school community. Instrumental in providing professional training for teachers, she is exceptionally talented at picking out effective instructional practices and willing to model these practices for students, teachers and parents.

Her drive to provide learning opportunities to teachers is not limited by the confines of her district. She frequently attends conferences and workshops to hone her own skills and bring back information to benefit her staff. This December, she will serve as a guest speaker at a statewide conference, and she has furthered her own learning by earning a superintendent endorsement.

Bowman is a member and recording secretary of the East Peoria District 86 Foundation, a fundraising body to support special projects that enrich experiences for students, and takes an active role in her community as a coach in various sports activities. A member of the Illinois Principals Association and Illinois Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, she is active at Living Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Peoria, where she teaches Sunday school, helps run events, and donates time to clean the church. iBi
