For more than three decades, the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has been operating IPMR Senior World at 719 Kumpf Blvd. in downtown Peoria, exemplifying its mission to improve function and quality of life. Jackie Bowers has been the director of IPMR Senior World since 2007. She’s passionate about senior service, and has more than 30 years of experience in providing care, education and administration for the geriatric population.
The services provided at Senior World are truly unique, with healthcare professionals providing personal care assistance, medical monitoring and socialization for older adults. It’s the best of both worlds: seniors can stay in their own homes, while leaving to enjoy daily care and build friendships.
A typical day begins with a reception at the door, with smiling faces anticipating the day’s activities, greeted by compassionate staff. A daily recreation program offers a variety of activities to meet the differing abilities and personal preferences of participants. Bingo is popular, while seasonal craft projects promote dexterity and concentration, and games, songs and exercise help to maximize physical and mental abilities. A nutritious lunch is served, and coffee and other beverages provide additional comforts of home. The fenced outdoor space at Senior World locations in Peoria and Morton provides fresh air and the delights of gardening and bird feeding.
The environment at IPMR Senior World allows for independence through activities and physical movement, while providing safety and security for the caregiver’s peace of mind. If caregivers do not take care of themselves, they put themselves at risk of illness, stress and depression. A half-day weekly attendance can provide an opportunity for caregivers to participate in their own social activities. “Caregivers tell me about their adventures at bridge club, luncheons, golf or bowling leagues, and church activities,” says Bowers. “These stories always delight me and assure me of the tremendous value of our work.” Younger caregivers use the service to maintain jobs or keep up with family and personal obligations, while caring for aging parents.
The Morton location of IPMR Senior World, located at 730 W. Jefferson Street behind Brandon Wood Retirement Community, is new this year. “We have found that a spouse at Brandon Wood may be a 24/7 caregiver and need the service we provide next door from time to time,” explains Bowers. “Other times, a Brandon Wood resident just enjoys our social activities and participates to build friendships.” Others travel to the Morton location from surrounding areas, including Delevan, Tremont, Mackinaw and Hopedale. We Care provides transportation from each of these locations, in addition to transporting participants to the Peoria location from Woodford and Tazewell counties. iBi
