Founded in 1977, the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) was created by 40 women in the transportation industry in Washington, D.C. They recognized the need to improve professional and personal advancement and develop industry and government recognition for women in transportation. Since then, WTS has grown considerably, and this year, the now-international organization celebrates its 32nd anniversary with more than 4,000 members in 42 chapters representing cities and states in the United States, Canada and Great Britain.
The Central Illinois Chapter of WTS was founded in 2004 and is currently made up of 17 members—both men and women interested in making advancements for women in the transportation sector. Their luncheon meetings, currently held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Tri-County Regional Planning offices, “are a vital force for the members of the group,” according to Vice President Alice Nobles Arn. Each meeting features a presentation by a local professional from transportation-related industries. Arn said the group sometimes meets for social and networking events, but their main focus remains on the monthly luncheons.
