A Publication of WTVP

Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall – these are three of the best-known and most important visual artists of the early 20th century. Using examples of their paintings, prints and sculptures, Kristan H. McKinsey will explore the ways in which their wives, lovers, and models shaped the careers and artwork of these men. Some of the women inspired the artists, and others provided critical feedback. Some reinvigorated the artists after periods of inactivity, while others could upset the creative flow. The degree to which the artists were happy in their marriages and love affairs can be read in the artwork they created. McKinsey is Director of the Illinois Women Artists Project, a research and documentation project based at Bradley University, and former curator of the Lakeview and Peoria Riverfront museums.
